Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe, and disabling brain disease. Approximately one percent of the population develops schizophrenia during their lifetime – more than two million Americans suffer from the illness in any given year. Although schizophrenia affects men and women with equal frequency, the disorder often appears earlier in men, usually in the late teens or early twenties; women are generally affected in the twenties to early thirties. People with schizophrenia often suffer terrifying symptoms such as hearing internal voices not heard by others, or believing that other people are reading their minds, controlling their thoughts, or plotting to harm them. These symptoms may leave them fearful and withdrawn. Their speech and behaviour can be disorganised and strange to the extent that they may be incomprehensible or frightening to others.

Diagnosing schizophrenia is quite a complicated procedure involving a lot of spent time observing the person’s actions and way of thinking. That person may start developing different symptoms like anxiety, confusion and starting to be suspicious on other people, mostly those that don’t agree with their view of things around; they may even refuse to admit the fact that they need help. Doctors have to put a correct diagnose so they will look for both positive and negative symptoms; strange thinking, hallucinations and delusions are positive signs and apathy, emotional flatness, inability to concentrate, wanting to avoid people or to be protected are negative symptoms.
Strange thinking is also a major symptom in schizophrenic people. Their ideas might seem a bit strange to other people making little sense to them. Logical thinking may also present a problem to them. Loneliness and isolation may install because of the inability of the patient to properly talk.

People generally call for the doctor if they see strange behaviors in one of their family members. Such episodes can occur only once in a life time or might be more frequent. Pay attention to all the strange things you see because they might be the symptoms of schizophrenia.
People suffering of schizophrenia will have an important change in their personality, they will be terrified about the fact that they hear voices or see things that are not real and they will have difficulties of controlling their own thoughts because of all these.
